Should you use high voltage caps on the output of a buck converter?

Hey guys,

I have a 100V to 12V step down DC-DC converter. The converter I’m using is adjustable, but is set to 12V with fixed resistors on the board. It is better to have the output capacitors able to withstand the full input voltage range, or it is unnecessary?

Hi martha,

That is going to be the least of your concerns if your buck converter ends up pushing high voltage to the low side from a component failure. Think about how many components will get damaged before even reaching 100V.
